During the Vedic age, the teacher or guru taught his student (çiñya) what is illusion (mäyä) on one hand, and, on the other hand, what is reality (satyam param). The guru gives his çiñya a process to transcend illusion by taking shelter of ultimate reality; that is the essence of his äçrama. The çiñya learns, by practice, how to make that transitional process from illusion to reality by the mercy of the real guru, the bona fide spiritual master. Please note that all emphases have been added in this article.
The Bhägavata school accepts Çrémad Bhagavad-gétä as the essence of Vedic philosophy, for all the Sampradäya Äcäryas of this school have written elaborate commentaries (bhäñyas) on Bhagavad-gétä (as well as on Vedänta Sütra) in order to establish their authorised branches to propagate the essential conclusions of the teachings (siddhänta):
sarvopaniñado gävo dogdhä gopäla-nandanaù
pärtho vatsaù sudhér bhoktä dugdham gétämåtam mahat
“This Gétopaniñad, Bhagavad-gétä, the essence of all the Upaniñads, is just like a cow, and Lord Kåñëa, who is famous as a cowherd boy, is milking this cow. Arjuna is just like a calf, and learned scholars and pure devotees are to drink the nectarean milk of Bhagavad-gétä.”
