Descent Into G.B.C. Dystopia

Please be careful not to change the ideas.”
Letter to Kirtänänanda, 2-10-67

“ . . . by nature, the people of India have a hankering for spiritual advancement, and, therefore, the present situation is a natural result of the clash between two opposite ideals.”
Letter to Mr. Kair, 7-8-69

The past is never past. It is always present.
And you better reckon with it in your daily experience.
Or it will get you. It will get you really bad.”
Bruce Springsteen

The relationship between ideas and ideals in Kåñëa consciousness is integrally connected. The relationship between the past and the present is similarly interrelated. That principle also applies within the Western bhakti movement, both in its previous and present iteration. As far as the scope of eternity is concerned, the clash of civilizations in the world at this time has no lasting relevance. Conversely, the clashes between Western sahajiyä groups—all of which are suppressing Çréla Prabhupäda’s branch of Lord Caitanya’s Hare Kåñëa movement of Kåñëa consciousness—has significant import. The fact that conditioned souls in the ordinary mix do not recognize this has no bearing on its impact.

Descent Into G.B.C. Dystopia

July, 2019

Second of a Four-Part Series

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

“People have respect for our movement. Now it is time for G.B.C. members to be very, very careful so that people may not point out any black spot in the behavior of our Society.”
Letter to T.K.G., 9-1-71

“Again, I am so much burdened by this administrative work that I feel great difficulty. I was very anxious to return to my Los Angeles home to sit down for translating work. But if you all, my right-hand men, are doing things without consulting me and making such big big changes within our Society without getting my opinion and the opinion of all the G.B.C. members, then what can I do?
Letter to Rüpänuga, 4-4-72

Descent Into G.B.C. Dystopia

June, 2019

(Make Your Ever-lovin’ Brother Happy.)

First of a Four-Part Series

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

“ . . . we have created these G.B.C. So, they should be very responsible men. Otherwise, they will be punished. They will be punished to become a çüdra. Although Yamaräja is a G.B.C., but he made a little mistake. He was punished to become a çüdra. So, those who are G.B.C.s, they should be very, very careful to administer the business of ISKCON. Otherwise, they will be punished. As the post is very great, similarly, the punishment is also very great.”
Platform Lecture, 6-4-74 in Geneva

“Then collect the opinions of each and every G.B.C. member, and, if the majority supports the idea, then it should be taken as a fact for being carried out in our society. The majority vote and my opinion should be taken. When the majority opinion is present, my opinion will be yes or no. In most cases, it will be yes unless it is grievously against our principles.”
Letter to Bhagavän, 8-20-71

Sahajiyas of the “ISKCON” Apa-sampradaya

May, 2019

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

Prabhupäda: These sahajiyäs will come out of so many devotees. What can be done? From my guru mahäräja’s disciples, so many sahajiyäs came. These are called sahajiyäs. Very easily they capture (the) thing. So my guru mahäräja used to say, “When my disciples will be sahajiyä, it will be more dangerous.”
Leading Secretary: Is it because we have the desire to come in contact with such persons that we contact them?
Prabhupäda: You may not desire, but if you are not strong, you’ll be misled by these rascals.
Room Conversation, 1-28-77, in Bhubaneçvara, India

“In the name of Caitanya Mahäprabhu, there are so many apa-sampradäyas. Apa-sampradäya means they present themselves as belonging to the Caitanya cult, but they are not at all bona fide. They are rejected.”
Platform Lecture, 1-28-73, in Calcutta, India

“ISKCON”: A Rebellion Moored in Nihilism

April, 2019

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

“The symptoms of the Kali-yuga, as mentioned above, namely avarice, falsehood, diplomacy, cheating, nepotism, violence and all such things, are already in vogue, and no one can imagine what is going to happen gradually with further increase of the influence of Kali until the day of annihilation.”
Çrémad-Bhägavatam, 1.15.37, purport

The Politics of “ISKCON” Inevitability

August, 2018

Part One of a Two-Part Series

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

“. . . there are many rascals in the name of Vaiñëavas. Be careful of them.”
Letter to Niraïjan, 11-21-72

The aim of ISKCON is not to found a new religious sect . . .”
Letter to Sir Roland Michener

You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty.
And then we shall fill you with ourselves.”
George Orwell, “1984”

Someone may be honored as a man of God in this degraded age, but his being so honored does not automatically make it so. People are easily deluded and misguided in Kali-yuga. If you think that this does not go on in the name of Kåñëa–or in what appears to be the Kåñëa consciousness movement–guess again. The fresh princes of “ISKCON” cut quite the profile, no doubt, but that does not mean that they are actually men of God. They are not as reliable or as honest or as loving as they superficially may appear to be.

The “ISKCON” Paradox

July, 2018

First of a Two-Part Series

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

“. . . it is admitted that all the statements in the Bible are not directly spoken by Jesus. Some of them are staged through the mouth of Jesus Christ . . . there are many passages in the Gospel which are later on set up to be spoken by Lord Jesus Christ, but actually they were manufactured by different devotees.”
Letter to Satsvarüpa, 10-31-69

“Knowledge revealed therein (Vedas, Mahäbhärata, Rämayäëa, Småti çästras) may appear in the beginning to be unbelievable. This is due to our nonsensical paradox that we want to verify everything by accommodating in our tiny brain.”
Caitanya-caritämåta, Ädi-Lélä, Summary Study of Chapter Five, 1967

The Next Black Swan

June, 2018

First of a Two-Part Series

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

“These things must be cleared up or there may be danger of split within our ranks. Try to keep the whole situation in unified condition. But if Siddha Svarüpa and his disciples are living there separately and peacefully, I have no objection, so long there is no controversy or ill feelings between their camp and yours.”
Letter to Madhudvéña, 12-29-72

“Çréla Prabhupäda wanted us to do everything in complete cooperation, and thus I am inclined to have full cooperation in this great attempt of preaching in the foreign countries. All the camps of our various camps may at least cooperate . . .”
Letter to Mädhava Maharäj, 8-1-66

Tear Off All the Wallpaper!

“Ävaraëätmikä-çakti means she is covering the reality, just as when the cloud covers the sunshine, and we cannot see. For a few days now, it’s been cloudy. We cannot see the sun, but that does not mean there is no sun in the sky.”
Platform Lecture, 9-26-73 in Bombay, India

The Titanic Taproots – The Finale
The Kirtanananda Swami expose

April, 2018

First of a Three-Part Series

by Kailäsa Candra däsa

At the end of 1977, Kértanänanda, unlike the ten other rittviks, decided that he would unilaterally become an initiating spiritual master. Whether or not he considered that his appointment as a rittvik (in July) augured an indirect recognition (that he would then become dékñä-guru after November 14th) is not an important consideration. Although he was present at the May 28th meeting in Prabhupäda’s quarters (where His Divine Grace stated “regular guru, that’s all”), it was clear in Kértanänanda’s mind that he would not act as one (a guru under vidhé sädhana regulations) after Prabhupäda left.

Kértanänanda had a different idea: He was going to imitate Prabhupäda, although His Divine Grace never authorized, empowered, or recognized any of his leading secretaries as either an uttama-adhikäré or his successor. Indeed, not only would Kértanänanda reject the concept of regular guru (a.k.a., monitor guru or madhyama-adhikäré) as being applicable to him, he would also reject anything that reined in the worship if it was placed upon him by the Governing Body Commission. At the fag end of December, 1977, a mere five weeks after Prabhupäda’s departure, Kértanänanda began initiating his own disciples.
